This version of gcc was compiled on May 15, 1998 and appears
to compile anything I have tried with no problems. Note that this
version 2.8.1 does NOT require the use of the fixincludes (or just-fixinc) scripts. If you are going to install this gcc, I
strongly recommend that you back up your current gcc, just in case you
uncover problems. This first version installs in /usr/local and its
bin, lib, man and other subdirectories. Note also that if you are going
to use g++, then you also need to install the libstdc++ library package
which installs in /usr/local as well. If you already have libstdc++-2.8.1
from this site, upgrade to libstdc++-2.8.1.1.
Note that for gcc-2.8.x, the libg++ package
is obsolete in general. Read the INSTALL file in the doc.gcc
directory for more details on this.
Read the documentation before you install or use
any version of gcc or related files.
